Why Service line Insurance is Important

by Kurt Kreager

When it comes to maintaining a home, many homeowners often overlook the importance of water and service line insurance. While most people understand the necessity of home insurance, which covers damages to the structure and contents of a house, service line insurance is an equally crucial aspect that deserves attention.

Service line insurance specifically covers the repair or replacement of utility lines that run from the street to your home. These lines include water pipes, sewer lines, and other essential connections. The significance of this type of insurance becomes evident when you consider the potential costs associated with repairing old water or service lines.

Over time, these underground pipes can deteriorate due to age, soil conditions, or tree root intrusion,  When a water line or sewer breaks, it can lead to significant damage not only to your property but also to your wallet. Repairing or replacing these lines is often a costly endeavor that can range from several hundred to several thousand dollars depending on the extent of the damage. Plus the water department usually bills you for the water!

Without service line insurance, homeowners are left to cover these expenses out-of-pocket. The 3 water line breaks & one sewer line break I have been involved in cost $7,000 to & 9,500 EACH! Only ONE was covered by Insurance. This can be a substantial financial burden that many are unprepared for. Service line insurance provides peace of mind by ensuring that these unexpected costs are covered. My coverage is only a few hundred dollars a year extra, & it saved me the all but a $500 deductible on the one that was insured.

In conclusion, while home insurance is vital for protecting against damages within the house itself, service line insurance is equally important for safeguarding against costly repairs to utility connections. Investing in this type of coverage ensures that homeowners are prepared for unforeseen circumstances involving their water and service lines, ultimately preserving both their property and financial stability. Consider adding it to your coverage next time you renew, or better yet, today if your house is old.
